Color Safety Assessment

An in-depth technical analysis focused on the assessment of color perception, which is relevant in programs that require a thorough evaluation of color vision in the field of aviation medicine.

Color Safety Assessment Using the Nagel Anomaloscope

The Nagel Anomaloscope is a test accepted in Italy by ENAC as a Level II examination for assessing color vision in cases where the patient has not passed the Ishihara color vision test. This is a Level II diagnostic tool for identifying color vision defects related to wavelength discrimination.

The instrument uses three lights—yellow, green, and red—projected onto a circular field divided into two halves. Using various testing methods, the patient is asked to balance the hue and brightness of the two half-fields, allowing the specialist to accurately assess color sensitivity. If necessary, the evaluation can be supplemented with additional tests, such as the Ishihara color plates, to complete the final assessment.

How the evaluation is conducted

An approach designed to adapt to different business needs, even across multiple locations, with more organized management of processes and healthcare documentation.

Step 1:
Specialist Evaluation

The process begins with a clinical assessment and a determination of the need for further evaluation.

Step 2:
Running the test

The patient performs the test using the Nagel Anomaloscope, following the specialist’s instructions.

Step 3:
Any additions

If necessary, the doctor may supplement the test with additional tests to complete the final evaluation.

When it may be necessary

A color vision assessment is recommended in cases where a more thorough evaluation of color sensitivity is necessary.

Team

The evaluation is conducted in a specialized setting dedicated to ophthalmology and the in-depth assessment programs offered by the aeromedical center.
